Formed by the volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains, Lake Kivu is one of the Great Lakes of Africa which lies between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. It covers a total area of 2,700 km2 and rises to an altitude of 1,460 m above sea level. This local coffee comes from the southern area of Lake Kivu, the terroir of Minova. This Bourbon variety is cultivated between 1600 and 2000 meters above sea level.
This coffee is produced by Great Lakes Coffee belonging to the Nicolaides family. Of Cypriot origin and established in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for more than 100 years, this family manages the production of several farms and supports many small producers in the Congo (and in Uganda also for that matter)
